Very CLASSY and TASTEFUL timeless melodic music!, November 9, 2001 Reviewer: A music fan from Los Angeles, CA USA 'Where We Started From' is a stellar, crafty pop release, period! The quality songs are well-written, with heartfelt, beautiful vocals & harmonies, and clockwork musicianship!! Some songs like Magazine Girl are more uptempo than others, such as the masterful gorgeous Who Made The Moon. Even the remakes of the classic Night Owls and Cool Change sound so original, and are truly played from another angle. The CD itself must have been recorded and mastered with care, given it's sonic quality and crisp soundstage and depth. Kudos to the band, and let's hope this is a taste of what's to come from LRB! The current band incarnation just kills!!! THE HEART OF A NIGHT OWL, August 13, 2001 Reviewer: Michael Butts from Martinsburg, WV USA Since their inception, this band from down under has produced some of the most melodic and enjoyable 'rock/pop' music of our time. With soaring vocal harmonies, beautiful lead vocals, and tremendous musicianship, the Little River Band is one of the classiest acts of the 70's, 80's, 90's and this young decade. Sure, we miss Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles, John Farnham, and all the other previous members. But with Wayne Nelson and Stevie Housden still fronting the band, and the addition of Greg Hind, Glenn Reither and Kevin Murphy, LRB proves it is still a musical force to be reckoned with. Guest musicians Lindsay Field and Paul Gildea also add to this stylish collection of eleven great tunes. The highlight to me is the sultry reworking of The Night Owls. Wayne's voice has never sounded smoother. Originally on the 'Time Exposure' album, Night Owls was a blistering, driving song that became a big hit for the group. So now, instead of a blazing electrical guitar intro, we get a haunting syntho intro, and a smooth acoustical/jazzy start. Instead of the electrifying guitar solo in the middle, Stevie opts for an elegant acoustic guitar solo; and at the end, the song blazes out, not so much in a rock vein, but as a smooth jazz/pop feel. I loved the original version, and this one is just as good in an entirely different vein. The reworking of Cool Change is pretty much the same as the original from the 'First Under The Wire' album, but Wayne is the vocalist this time, and he shows respect for the masterful writing of his former band members. The rest of the songs are not as identifying as the previous LRB songs, but they stand on their own. Who Made the Moon is a beautiful, if somewhat sad, reflection on the brevity of life, as seen from a father/daughter relationship. Proceeds from this song are being donated to 'Angel House Shelter Foundation', a non-profit organization for abused young mothers and their babies. Wayne Nelson is the founder of this organization. Where We Started From is a strong CD opener, reminiscent of It's a Long Way There in its structure and arrangement. The remaining songs stand on their own, even if Kevin's vocal strengths are not as strong as the other vocalists. But, what the heck--- it's SO GOOD to have them back! In any form---as long as Nelson and Housden are involved, LRB lives!! Little River Band rolls on, July 30, 2003 Reviewer: Ron from Tacoma, WA (a blue collar town) I was a bit skeptical when I first listened to this CD - the first disc of new music from the band in 10 years. I admit part of my skepticism was because of the many lineup changes since the last LRB release 'Get Lucky' in 1990. I was willing to give it a chance, though, because I had always enjoyed the songs Wayne Nelson sang on their albums (little known fact: Wayne is the lead singer on half of the songs from their 1986 album 'No Reins'). So it was a pleasant surprise to hear the classic LRB harmonies are intact, and that the band can still come up with a full CD of catchy, enjoyable pop and rock tunes. My personal favorites are Magazine Girl, Where We Started From, and the two sung by guitarist Greg Hind, This Place and I Think I Left My Heart With You. The latter tune has a touch of Beatles in the chords and melody, it stays in your head forever. Drummer Kevin Murphy is also a fine singer, really this is the most well rounded lineup of LRB I have heard yet, and they're even better live. If you're a fan of LRB, this CD is a worthy addition to your collection. Sonic and musical pop PERFECTION! Phenomenal CD!, May 23, 2003 Reviewer: A music fan from Los Angeles, CA USA LRB is utterly phenomenal! The old incarnation AND the current one is as tight as tight can be. The previous May 10th reviewer needs to take his head out of the sand and realize that bands DO change personnel over time. If anything, the current lineup is just as musically proficient, if not MORE than the classic LRB lineup! Well, maybe that is sacrilege to say here, but suffice it to say that 'WWSF' is a masterful collection of clockwork, memorable songs that should grace everyone's CD player! And the beyond beautiful, beyond touching song Who Made The Moon will bring tears to your eyes it is so heartfelt! One of the most beautiful songs I've EVER heard. An incredible piece of work! And the recording and mastering quality would please a true audiophile, which these days, is not too easy, given all the compressed and flat sounding CD's that are being released to the public. The Little River BLAND, May 10, 2003 Reviewer: A music fan from Chicago, IL Folks - don't be fooled by this cover band. This isn't the real Little River Band, but merely a bunch of imposters making a living off of the name. The songs are barely mediocre and the vocals come nowhere near those of the REAL Little River Band. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this CD -- spend your money on the 2CD Rhino hits package --> that way you'll hear the REAL LRB. Great new CD, May 9, 2003 Reviewer: Dave Riggs from Melbourne, Australia The new CD is great. The lyrics in Moon and This Place are as emotionally charged as I have heard. Keep up the great work guys!!! |
