BEEB BIRTLES played a key role in the founding of LITTLE RIVER BAND beside GRAEHAM GOBLE and GLENN SHORROCK. He had already gained some success as a member of the Australian teenager band ZOOT, later teamed up with DARRLY COTTON for FRIEZE, and was subsequently asked by GRAEHAM to join MISSISSIPPI, a band that released only one album and two singles between 1973 and 1975. When MISSISSIPPI was confronted with a lack of success on an England trip the group ceased to exist and disbanded. GLENN SHORROCK, a fellow Australian who was also staying in London at the time, was invited by BEEB and GRAEHAM to form a new group, eventually leading to the foundation of LITTLE RIVER BAND in Melbourne some weeks later.

Since then BEEB'S outstanding voice, his composition skills and guitar playing became a significant brand mark of the early LRB, and in the prime time years up to 1983. In that time span he penned hits like Witchery, Everyday Of My Life, Happy Anniversary [with DAVID BRIGGS] and Take Me Home for LITTLE RIVER BAND. In 1979 he and GRAEHM GOBLE recorded a duo album under the name BIRTLES & GOBLE, which yielded the highly-acclaimed album 'The Last Romance'. Three years later, one year after GLENN SHORROCK resigned from the band, BEEB also decided to leave, and pursued a career as a songwriter and producer. In the early 90s BEEB and his family moved to the US, where they live in a greater Nashville area. In that environment BEEB worked closely with a variety of fine musicians of the local rock and country scene, recording demo songs together with keyboarder and producer BILL CUOMO. In 1998 BEEB and BILL founded Sonic Sorbet, their own record label. This label was also instrumental in publishing BEEB'S first solo album, 'Driven By Dreams', which was a delightful masterpiece for LRB fans as well as every assertive music lover. Parallel to that he was the first LRB member to launch his own website at http://www.birtles.com/.

Press information of 1998:

Rock and roll music is forever changing, progressing.
So is BEEB BIRTLES

First came the discovery, the celebration of rock. Then, the group experience, when every kid on the block realized that he could be like his heroes if he wanted. Later, the best of the group players found each other and formed even better live groups. And now, in the Nineties, it's the era of the Great Survivors, with the best of the best stepping out on their own.

BEEB BIRTLES is one of those Great Survivors. He has been through the whole rock and roll journey. The discovery, enjoying his first taste of popularity and success with a pop band group called ZOOT, drifting from apprenticeship to the 'Big Time' with the experienced friends in the LITTLE RIVER BAND.

And then, in 1984, eight years after forming and playing a key role in the LITTLE RIVER BAND, BEEB BIRTLES shocked the band members by announcing that it was time for him to move on, up, and out on his own.

Wherever he has been, BEEB BIRTLES has made his presence felt. Australian audiences and record buyers have followed each and every twist and turn of his career. His voice is what the one who wrote LRB'S first single, Curiosity (Killed The Cat), and pushed for change and adventure.

And now, the greatest adventure so far, a Great Survivor, BEEB BIRTLES is ON HIS OWN.

Beeb Birtles & Graeham Goble - The Last Romance
1979
After the successful release of 'First Under The Wire', BEEB BIRTLES and GRAEHAM GOBLE had composed so many songs that had not been used by LRB and were very keen to be put out as a duo. They decided to produce this album, opening with the fantastic Lonely Lives. The album comes quite romantic and slow, so in my opinion it was a good decision not to have these songs released as LRB material. There is a special quality between BEEB and GRAEHAM only heard on this recording and on the song I Don't Worry No More from the 'Backstage Pass' release. In the meantime the album was [thankfully] re-released on CD in 1997. LRB members such as DAVID BRIGGS on guitars, GEORGE McARDLE on bass and DEREK PELLICCI on drums joined the two in the studio, together with other session musicians. Zoot - Zoot Locker
1980
ZOOT were the early experience of BEEB BIRTLES, occasionally backing for a young British singer in their early years: JOHNNY FARNHAM. Originally known as TIMES UNLIMITED the band was renamed to ZOOT in 1968 and gained success wearing pink clothes and their hit-singles 1 x 2 x 3 x 4, Little Roland Lost and the BRIAN CADD/DON MUDIE composition It's About Time. In 1970 they released their only album 'Just Zoot'. Members of the band have been DARRYL COTTON [as far as I know he had another Australian hit in 1980], TERRY BRITTEN [who later became a very popular songwriter for artists such as Tina Turner], JOHN D'ARCY [who left in 1968 for ALISON GROS with GRAEHAM GOBLE] and RICK SPRINGFIELD [who had several worldwide smash hits and albums]. This album compiles their best and most successful recordings. And please be sure you don't miss the ZOOT story told by BEEB BIRTLES himself! Zoot - Zoot Locker
Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles, Graeham Goble -Beginnings, Vol. 1 & 2

With the worldwide success of LRB in the second half of the 70s Capitol Records decided to release these two vinyl compilations of early recordings of GLENN SHORROCK, BEEB BIRTLES and GRAEHAM GOBLE. The sleeve notes read: "But before there was Little River Band, three of its founding members apprenticed in two of Australia's most popular, and seminal, bands - Glenn Shorrock in Axiom, Beeb Birtles and Graham Goble in Mississippi. ... Of value to historian and fan alike, these tracks provide a key to the sound that have made Little River Band a favorite of audiences throughout the world." 1999
Shortly prior to his 50th birthday BEEB BIRTLES released his first solo recording since terminating his LITTLE RIVER BAND membership back in 1984. In the early 90s he moved to the US to live in Nashville, where he has started to work with famous producer BILL CUOMO. Since its release 'Driven By Dreams' is regarded one of the most interesting and best releases that are affiliated with the LRB sound. Beeb Birtles - Driven By Dreams

2003
After more than twenty years founding members BEEB BIRTLES, GRAEHAM GOBLE and GLENN SHORROCK finally reunited in 2002 and extensively toured Australia and the Asian area, mainly performing older songs made famous as LITTLE RIVER BAND. As a result of these performances this album hit the market in October 2003, containing 18 tracks. Due to the fact that the lineup surrounding STEPHEN HOUSDEN and WAYNE NELSON holds all the rights of the name "LITTLE RIVER BAND" BEEB, GRAEHAM and GLENN decided to simply use their own names, but the cover states "The original voices of LITTLE RIVER BAND" which is an indisputable historical fact.
